Government at all levels have been urged to increase funding of the education sector in order to improve the standard of teaching and learning in the country.
Speaking during the presentation of scholarship to students and pupils across schools in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, the founder of Bayo and Bunmi Babalola Foundation, Pastor Sunday Adebayo Babalola, stated that the economic meltdown has made it difficult for many parents to enrol their wards in schools.
According to Babalola, the sum of N5 million had been provided by the foundation to sponsor 253 pupils and students in Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state.
“This is the third edition of scholarship awards by this foundation with N5million for 253 beneficiaries, aside logistics and other miscellaneous expenses.
“In 2015, there was a total of 103 beneficiaries and in 2016, we had 219,” he said adding that the gesture is geared towards alleviating the plight of the vulnerable in the state.
Babalola further stated that the inability of many hardworking parents to provide for their family should be blamed on the government for not providing the enabling environment.
“It is stating the obvious that the state government has not shown sufficient commitment and seriousness with education advancement, just like they have failed in other sectors.
“This failure in the education sector is unforgivable because it is the source of building future leaders who will take over from us.”
