Atletico lifts 3rd UEL trophy

 

Atletico Madrid lifted their third Europa League trophy on Wednesday night after a 3-0 goal riot against Marseille at Lyon.

A brace from Antione Greizmann put the visitors ahead of their host before a last minute goal from Gabi sealed the deal for the Los Rojiblancos.

Marseille launched an early attempt at the 4th minute of the showdown at Lyon. A perfect through-ball from Payet met Germain who shot just wide in front of the goalkeeper.

The first 10 minutes saw Marseille push quick attack to deny Atletico the chance to set up their defensive shape.

Atletico Madrid opened scores at the 21th minute as Antoine Griezmann netted his 28th goal this season for the Diego Simeone-led team. A dreadful defensive mistake put the host team, Marseille below their visitors in a 1-0 scoreline.  A pass by the goalkeeper flew off the Anguissa’s boot in an awful control pattern and it gave Griezmann a free run through on goal.

Marseille made the first changes of the night at the 31st minute, Payet was sent off crying due to an injury he incurred during the game as Lopez was introduced.

The gamed ended 1-0 in favour of Atletico Madrid who seemed to have started the game poorly but took the lead off a costly defensive mistake from the host team who lost their creative genius, Payet to injury in the first half.

Antoine Greizmann scored a brace at the 46th minute to make the scoreline 2-0 in favour of Atletico Madrid.

Marseille made their second changes at the 74th minute as Valere Germain went off for Kostas Mitroglou.

The newly introduced Marseille man, Mitroglou nearly scored at the 81st minute with a header that touched the far end of the woodwork and bounced out.

Gabi netted Atletico Madrid’s third goal of the night at the 89th minute, The 34-year-old midfielder, Gabi finished a fine Atletico move! Griezmann put Costa behind the defence and into the channel, he passed inside, Koke tapped it on and Gabi rifled the ball low into the corner.

Greizmann left the stage for Fernando Torres at the added time, 91st minute and it was a farewell match for the Spanish striker who will be leaving at the end of the season.
