In a bid to curb the menace of drug abuse among youths in the country, students of University of Ilorin embarked on a roadshow on Saturday.
The students, who are members of Drug Free Club of the institution embarked on the roadshow to create awareness on the danger in drug abuse.
The students who were in company of officials of the National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kwara Command were seen distributing flyers to motorists and sensitising members of the public.
Speaking during the awareness campaign, President of the Drug Free Club Unilorin, Benjamin Olayiwola said the purpose of the programme is to campaign against drug abuse both within and outside the school campus.
“We put up this roadshow to play our part as advocates for the amelioration of drug abuse. Though we are not the cure but a means to ending its menace in the country,” he added.
As part of the efforts, Olayiwola said the club organised seminars and outreach programmes.
“With this sensitisation the beneficiaries will also educate their family members and neighbouts on the danger of drug abuse and addiction in our society.
“Our targets are the students and youths since they constitute the highest population into drug use and abuse in the society,” he stressed.
He then called on parents and guardians to monitor activities of their children and wards respectively, as they can easily be influenced by their peers.
Olayiwola also called for collaboration from all the tiers of government, urging them to conduct outreaches particularly to the youths on the negative impact of drugs abuse.
