Barrister Kazeem Debo Adeyemo is the newly elected NBA Second Vice President from the north. In this interview with ACTING EDITOR, MUMINI ABDULKAREEM conducted in his office along Ijakadi Road Offa, he talks about one of his most dramatic moment in practice. Excerpt:
There was a case I handled where one of the wives of a blind man was directed to me to help. The man in question has challenges with his eyes and was already married to another woman. The first wife approached me and after hearing her brief, I took it and decided to help out. Luckily for me, I know the man they sued. Then I advised my client that people may misunderstand her by the decision to sue the blind man and may think she has cheated him. So I advised her to serve Almighty God through the blind man by letting him be. So I advice and pleaded that the man should give him what she was asking. The man now released N90,000. For the period that I filed the suit, they gave me nothing but only promised to pay if we are able to get something at the end of the case. I think I used around N7,000 to file the case. When the N90,000 was paid, they brought it to my office and I deducted the N7,000 only, no appearance fee or any other expenses I incurred during the process. But surprisingly, the man came to my office shouting from downstairs that he never knew I was going out with his wife who hired me, that he was not the person that hired me in the first place. I was so mad and I had to call the police and get him arrested only for people to be begging me again and eventfully, I have to let him go. If I was not a lawyer that day, I would have assaulted and beaten him to stupor. But being a lawyer, there is limit to which I can go but I cursed him that he will never know peace having served him honestly and ensured that things work in his favour. He later came back to beg me and women who incited him, later left him and even sent him to prison.
