A socio-cultural, Third Estate has lamented poor improvement in science education within Ilorin Emirate, Kwara State.
The President of the Third Estate, Alhaji Ahmed Bolaji-Nagode while speaking at the 2017 Eid-el-Kabir Dinner organised by the club in llorin the Kwara capital, called on development associations in Ilorin Emirate to establish education endowment for the growth of science education for technological advancement.
Bolaji-Nagode who is the Director General, National Power Training lnstitute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) , noted that there is no remarkable improvement in science education in the llorin emirate which comprise llorin West, llorin South, llorin East, Asa and Moro Local Government areas of the state
He suggested that various development Associations in the emirate should utilize the endowment fund in sponsoring brilliant indigenes of the emirate to study science courses in tertiary institutions.
The President described the condition of science education in some schools in the state as not encouraging and charged development associations to salvage the situation.
He noted that no government no matter how benevolent can singlehandedly solve the problem confronting the education sector
Bolaji-Nagode called for the establishment of lCT centres and Agro Allied industries by well meaning Indigenes to arrest the problem of soaring unemployment in the state.
The President of the Third Estate advocated for the establishment of data bank which will highlight achievers from the emirate to serve as Inspiration for younger generation
“The llorin emirate has produced the first indigenous lawyer from the North, the Chief Justice of Nigeria President of the Court of Appeal, number two citizen during the military era and presently the Senate President, ” he said.
The outgoing Vice Chancellor of the University of llorin, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali in his remarks identified lack of electricity as factor retarding the development of science education.
He said no science practical can be carried out effectively without power supply which many institutions cannot afford.
The Guest Lecturer at the Dinner and Director, Test Administration with the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB), Dr Yusuf Lawal disclosed that more applicants apply for Arts and Management courses than Science courses.
He said more applicants needed to be encouraged to study Science courses in Tertiary institutions for technological advancement in the emirate.
The representative of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed and the state Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Atolagbe Alege in his remarks called on well meaning indigenes of the state and corporate bodies to complement the state government’s effort in providing qualitative education.
