Alleged Improper Dressing: School principal, teacher face  sanction for cutting student body with blade – Commissioner

The Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Bilikisu Oniyangi has directed the Teaching Service Commission to issue queries to the Principal of Government Day Secondary School (GDSS), Odo-Okun, Ilorin, Alhaja Segilola Onimago and a teacher, Mr Adeyemi for cutting the body of a student, Issa Suleiman with blade over alleged improper dressing and for not reporting the matter to the appropriate authority.

Hajia Oniyangi in a press statement issued by the Press Secretary of the ministry, Yakub Kamaldeen Aliagan yesterday, expressed shock over the development, adding that both the principal and the teacher will be sanctioned in line with Civil Service rules.

In addition, the Commissioner directed the school management to provide a befitting school uniform for the victim.

While counselling the student to be obedient and take his studies seriously, the Commissioner disclosed that the ministry will organise and sponsor a private coaching for the affected student for him to be able to meet up with his peers in school.

In her words; “When I asked the student some questions, he couldn’t communicate in English fluently. From my investigations, I learnt that he is a truant student that just repeated the class. On this note, the ministry will start monitoring his studies and performance.

“Also, we will organise a private coaching for him to be able to meet up with his peers and also be useful to himself and the society.”

Responding, the mother of the victim, Alhaja Bilikisu Suleiman appreciated the Commissioner’s gesture to support her son’s education. She however appealed to her to tamper justice with mercy on the principal and the teacher.

The Commissioner on Thursday ordered the Director of Schools Services of the ministry to summon the principal, the teacher and the victim in company of his parents.

They all assembled at the office of the Commissioner last Friday and during interrogation, it was established that the teacher carelessly inflicted injury on the Senior Secondary School 2 student while trying to tear the tight fitted school uniform Issa wore with razor blade.

This medium, last week broke the story on how Adeyemi, who is said to be the head of Guidance and Counselling unit of the school challenged the 18-year-old student for wearing a tight fitted school uniform and subsequently reached for a razor blade to tear the uniform and consequently cut body of the student.

Narrating his ordeal to our reporter last Wednesday, at the family residence located at Jooro area, off Asa Dam Road, Ilorin, Issa said, “l was at the food vendors, stand in the school on Tuesday when the teacher called me from afar.

“While standing before him, he queried why I wore a tight uniform to school and he did not wait for my explanation before he brought out a razor blade and inflicted cuts indiscriminately on my arm and blood started gushing out.”

Speaking further, he said that the incident was witnessed by another staff identified as Mr. Ayinla.

“When I got home, I tried to keep it away from my mother but one of my classmates reported the case to her. Though I am aware my mother went to our school and met with the Principal, yesterday, (Tuesday), I however don’t know what transpired between them,” he said.
