Corporate companies in Nigeria lack skilled secretaries – Capt Boyo

The Chairman of Overland Airways, Captain Edward Boyo has bemoaned the dearth of skilled secretaries in corporate companies in Nigeria.

He said secretaries working in such companies do not possess the requisite rudiments to carry out their responsibilities.

He made this known in his speech at the public presentation of a book titled: Guide to Writing Effective Minutes of Meetings, authored by Rasheed Aiyelabegan.

Boyo, who is also the Chairman, Board of International Aviation College (IAC) Ilorin, said,  ” Minutes taking is a problem in Nigeria and what people read in the university is theory not practical.

“Some administrative secretaries don’t have the experience and do not follow the standards for minutes taking rather they set wrong standard for themselves.

“What the author has done is translating his experiences into practice that will assist secretarial work in   corporate organisations.

Boyo, who chaired the occasion called on called the Kwara State government to adopt the book as a curriculum for its education system.

In his remarks, the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed noted that the administration and management is gradually becoming a lost art.

Represented by the state Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Bilikisu Oniyangi, he said “Minutes taking is not only crucial for accurate record keeping but it also enhances meetings and their outcomes.”

He commended the author, who is the Registrar of IAC, for the initiative in writing the book and the tenacity of bringing it to fruition despite the demands of his office.

Reviewing the book,, Barr. Kehinde Kolawole Eleja (SAN) said the book which contains 94 pages segmented into five  sections, will help those concerned to acquire necessary skill .

Earlier in his address,  the author who is also the Registrar of IAC,  said he  encountered a lot of challenges particularly in the area of writing minutes of meetings as an administrative officer both in public and private organisations, which prompted him to wrote the book.

 ” I decided to write this book to guide those who are new in the task and to bail out professional secretaries, administrative officers nd clerks for effective writing of minutes in meetings, ” he explained.
