Babatunde happy with Champions League final replay

Michael Babatunde has expressed his happiness over the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to order a replay of the second leg of the CAF Champions League final clash between his Moroccan club, Wydad Casablanca and Esperance of Tunisia.
Esperance led 1-0 in Friday’s second leg but their Moroccan opponents left the pitch after an equaliser they scored was disallowed.
Wydad wanted the video assistant referee to check if the goal should stand but the system was not working.
A CAF statement said on Wednesday, “conditions of game and safety were not met” and that the second leg should be replayed at a neutral venue.
Wydad is yet to officially react to the news but Babatunde said he is delighted that the match will be replayed.
Babatunde hopes that his team will grab the opportunity and fight hard to win the replay and the Champions League title fair and square.
“This really excites me, to be honest, the controversial way the game in Tunisia ended wasn’t right.
“CAF has taken the right decision now by ordering a replay at a neutral venue because the continent deserves it.
“This replay is the best way to determine the true champions of Africa and not the way it ended in Rades.”
Wydad Casablanca had put the controversies of the African Champions League second leg behind them to clinch their 20th Moroccan league title on Tuesday.
The championship was won with a game to spare with a 4-1 win over Olympique Khouribga which put them six points clear of city rivals Raja.
“We’ve won the league title and winning the Champions League trophy was the target at the start of the season,” Babatunde added.
“Now we have another chance to do it. The players are delighted and our fans are happy because a chance has been presented to have another go at it.”

With Rohr welcoming Captain John Mikel Obi back into the team and with Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo in top form, the former Arsenal youngster was likely to be the casualty.

… says, decision to axe duo taken before match

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has inferred that the decision to axe Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho and Rotherham United defender Semi Ajayi was taken before Saturday’s friendly against Zimbabwe.
The German revealed that he had been monitoring the performance of Nigeria players before they stepped foot in Asaba, adding that it was difficult for him to rate the players because of the rainy conditions in the friendly vs Zimbabwe.
In truth, Rohr already made it clear from the word go that he was dropping a striker and a midfielder, and Iheanacho and Ajayi fall into the category of players.
”You cannot judge from one game in these conditions. We already have our opinion before the match because we observed them throughout the season and we saw what they did and also all week in the training sessions,” Rohr said post-match.
”We had seven training sessions to see the fitness and confidence of the players. It’s not this match alone that will give us a decision on the two players we have to drop.”
As many as seven players classed as offensive players were given a run-out against Zimbabwe, but Rohr has stressed that won’t be the case at the Africa Cup of Nations.
”You see that we played with seven strikers, all the strikers who deserve to play. We started with three strikers, the others came in.
”Normally in a match you cannot bring so many strikers. We played with a lot of offensive players.
”We have Chukwueze, Kalu, Henry, Osimhen, Paul, Simon also. The choice of dropping two players is really difficult for me,” the former Bayern Munich defender concluded.

…Mikel names 2 players who impressed him

Former Chelsea star, John Obi Mikel has named two talented players in the Super Eagles squad who impressed him in the goalless draw against Zimbabwe on Saturday.

”The coach has invited the players that will do the job for us. It is a very good blend of young and experience. Like the coach said, we needed a little bit of experience – Shehu and Ighalo were not on the pitch,” Mikel said at the post match press conference.
“I think it is also good for the young players to play this game, you know Chukwueze, Kalu, you could see a bit of flashes of talent. They are very good players.
”I think we will work on when to run with the ball, when not to run, when to pass, but you could see the talent is there for them. I think they can do great things in this Nations Cup.
”We just have to keep talking to them, we the senior players, the coaches and hopefully we will have a very good plan in the Nations Cup and do great things.”
Mikel was outstanding in the goalless draw against Zimbabwe and was rightly named the Man of the Match in his first game for the Super Eagles since June 2018.

He returned as captain of the team after a leave of absence since Nigeria’s world cup campaign in Russia. Mikel missed 7 matches since then including all the 2019 AFCON qualifiers and a high profile friendly against Egypt.
Had he made himself available for selection, the 32-year-old midfielder would have seen his caps reach 94; just 7 short of the all-time record jointly held by Vincent Enyeama and Joseph Yobo.
