NLC Election: Chairmanship aspirant disagrees on consensus arrangement

The Kwara State Chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) will today (Thursday) hold its delegates congress to elect its executives for another four years.
This is coming as the tenure of the incumbent chairman of the Congress, Com. Kareem Agunbiade will terminate soon.
This medium observed yesterday that the state chairmen and secretaries of various associations that formed the NLC held a marathon meeting to agree on consensus arrangement for the election. It was however gathered that the arrangement to elect the incoming chairman on consensus hit the rocks as an aspirant insist on going to the poll.
The two major contestants as gathered by National Pilot for the position of Chairman are; the Kwara State Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Issa Ore and the state Treasurer of NLC, Comrade David Kayode Ehindero.
Speaking on the development, the NLC Chairman, Agunbiade said, “Our election is holding tomorrow (Thursday) and from individual unions we expect two representatives each which are their Chairman and Secretary for the delegates’ election.
“We passed a resolution that as we have been holding the elections before now, we still want consensus arrangement in line with the decision of the elders of the Congress.
“All the unions that attended that meeting signed the communiqué of abiding by the submission of our elders. So the leaders called us yesterday and shared the various positions to the unions.
According to him, a member of the Congress was angry that he was not carried along in the sharing of the state executive positions in NLC.
He said, “We expect our National Deputy President, Alhaji Najeemdeen Yasin to intervene on resolving the sharing formula.”
Agunbiade however urged the delegates to conduct themselves during the election in order to avert crisis.
Speaking with one of the contestants for the chairmanship, Alhaji Ore said, “I’m proud of the opportunity given to me for this prestigious position. “
To his opponent, he simply said, “We’ll meet at the poll.”
Similarly, Comrade Ehindero popularly addressed as DK stressed that he wants to rescue civil service with progressive and transformation agenda.
He maintained that he will not step down for any consensus process.
“I’m standing for the state chairmanship position and will accept defeat in an open, free and fair election. I’m not withdrawing for the consensus candidate,” he said.
