Glutathione; body’s master oxidant
Glutathione (GSH) is often referred to as the body’s master antioxidant. Composed of three amino acids – cysteine, glycine, and glutamate – glutathione can be found in virtually every cell of the human body. The highest concentration of glutathione is in the liver, making it critical in the body’s detoxification process.
Glutathione is also an essential component to the body’s natural defence system. Viruses, bacteria, heavy metal toxicity, radiation, certain medications, and even the normal process of aging can all cause free-radical damage to healthy cells and deplete glutathione. Glutathione depletion has been correlated with lower immune function and increased vulnerability to infection due to the liver’s reduced ability to detoxify.
As the generation of free radicals exceeds the body’s ability to neutralize and eliminate them, oxidative stress occurs. A primary function of glutathione is to alleviate this oxidative stress.
The human body is made up of trillions of cells – the smallest unit of life. And an individual body produces an estimated 40 billion new cells every day.
For each cell to perform at it’s best while maintaining optimum health and well being, it requires Glutathione.
Glutathione is what keeps the cells healthy.
If there is enough Glutathione the cells will be healthy and if the cells don’t have enough of it, they won’t be healthy.
Glutathione is produced naturally by every cell in the body. It is the most powerful antioxidant.
When you leave a new, uncoated iron pipe outside exposed to the environment for some time, it starts to rust. The same thing will happen to the body if it doesn’t have protective coating, which is Glutathione.
Glutathione is critical for your health.
From the age of 20, the Glutathione levels start to go downhill, this is normal and it happens naturally. The Glutathione levels drop 10 to 15% each decade.
Other external factors such as stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, environmental toxins (exhaust smoke), alcohol, and illnesses also cause Glutathione to go down even faster.
As a matter of fact, most health challenges and diseases are associated with low Glutathione level. Studies show that there are over 74 diseases associated with low glutathione level including; Diabetes, Hypertension, Stroke, Arthritis, Erectile Dysfunction, Infertility, Sickle Cell, Kidney Disease and so many more.
