The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), an umbrella body of health workers at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) has lamented the ordeal its members went through in the hands of the immediate past Chief Medical Director (CMD of the hospital, Prof. Abdulwaheed Olatinwo, describing it as a nightmare.

The chairman of JOHESU, UITH, Ilorin, Com. Olutunde Oluwawumi stated this yesterday during a briefing with our medium in his office.

According to him, the staff of the hospital went through hell during the eight year reign of the immediate CMD as their welfare and other benefits were toyed with.

The union boss accused Olatinwo’s administration of not paying attention to workers welfare which ironically started during his regime.

According to him, It is shameful that no other Teaching Hospital in Nigeria had been so brutal in the maltreatment of her work force in this respect adding that efforts to compel management under Olatinwo to pay the affected members of staff is yet to materialize till this moment.”

On the emergence of the new CMD, Prof Abdulahi Yusuf, Olutunde described his appointment as timely and well deserved.

He noted that the expectation of the union is high on Yusuf who he noted is poised to move the hospital forward and “we are strongly ready to work with him”,

“We want him to marshal and administer the hospital by equipping it with latest equipment to meet up with international standard. He should also strive to make the hospital a five star health resort and put in place a conducive working environment for the staff of the hospital

He charged the new CMD to immediately address numerous challenges befalling the hospital, so as to make it meet up with its pairs in the country.

“Presently, our yearly promotion exercise is been delayed- the new Chief Medical Director should look at this so that there won’t be accumulated arrears. In fact, this is the genesis of the long crisis we had.”

“2011, 2009, 2017 promotion arrears have not been settled. It is normal to agitate to what is right.”

The JOHESU boss further said, the union in the state is not happy to go on strike except when their welfare is being affected.

He said, we equally want the new CMD to look at the stoppage and non-payment of uniform arrears of our Nurses which Olatinwo stopped for over three years now.

Also, speaking on this development, the President, Association of Residence Doctors, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Dr. Owolabi Adebayo describes the appointment of the new CMD as a welcome development.

According to him, Prof Yusuf is a live member of Association of Residence Doctor (ARD), and his antecedents in medical practice stand him out.
