A 16-year old, Aliyu Abdulkadir, who was mistaken for monkey, was
reportedly shot dead by a hunter, Afolayan Lekan, while fetching
leaves for his goats in Osi, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara
State.
Afolayan, was said to have shot at the minor while hunting for animals
with his dogs in the bush.
The hunter was yesterday dragged before magistrate Idiagbon Aluko for
the offences of culpable homicide not punishable with death contrary
to section 220 (C) of penal code law.
The Police First Information Report (FIR) revealed that the matter was
transferred from Divisional Police Headquarters, Ekiti Division, Osi,
to the Criminal investigation and Intelligence Department, Ilorin, for
discreet investigation.
The Police report noted that the father of the deceased, one Saheed
Abdulkadir, of Gaa Ajase, Osi, reported the case at the police
station.
The father of the deceased according to the FIR, informed the Police
that his son left home to cut leaves for goats but was shot dead while
on top of a tree.
Discreet investigation conducted by the police however led to the
arrest of the defendant, of Oke Imole compound in Osi.
The defendant, during interrogation, the FIR disclosed admitted
committing the crime, claiming that he ran after monkeys with his dogs
to where the Aliyu was cutting leaves.
He explained further in the FIR that while his dogs stopped by a tree
barking, he saw an object like a monkey on the tree.
The FIR added that the defendant fired at the object only to discover
that it was a Fulani boy, (deceased) after moving close.
Afolayan was said to have reported the incident to the Olosi Of Osi,
Oba Saliu Adasofegbe who later took the matter to the police station
and facilitated his arrest.
In his submission, the prosecutor informed the court that the case
before it carries capital punishment saying it’s not bailable.
He prayed the court to remand the defendant in prison.
Aluko, in his ruling, ordered the remand of the defendant while the
matter was adjourned to 11th October, 2019.
