The only surviving wife of Nigeria’s first prime minister, late Sir
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Hajiya Jummai Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, is
reportedly dead.
Hajia Jummai was recently discharge from an India hospital after she
went to seek medical attention for her heart disease.
The late Hajiya Jummai reportedly died in Lagos in the early hours of
Sunday after she relapsed and went into a coma, according to the
granddaughter of the late Balewa, Hajiya Hajara Yakubu Wanka.
While confirming the death, Hajiya Wanka said the late prime
minister’s wife died of cardiac arrest.
According to her, the deceased had stopped in Lagos to rest before
returning to Bauchi to continue her rehabilitation and recuperation
after returning from the medical trip to India.
“Her corpse will be brought to Bauchi on Monday for burial. I cannot
tell you her exact age at the moment but I will confirm that and get
back to you,” she stated.
