Akpom switches allegiance to Nigeria

Out of favour Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom is still in the plans of the national team of Nigeria as the forward is among players approached by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to switch allegiance from England to Nigeria.
Akpom trained with the Super Eagles of Nigeria during their training camp in London early this year, and talks were held with the forward and Ola Aina who has already made his debut for Nigeria.
However the former England youth international asked for more time before committing himself to the Super Eagles, with his future at Arsenal also heavy on his mind.
At Arsenal the forward is yet to be given a minute of first team football this season by manager Arsene Wenger despite having a fairly successful time at loan last season with newly promoted Brighton & Hove Albion although he failed to score a goal in the ten games he played for the club.
Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr is however willing to hand him a second chance if he is able to break into the Arsenal first team, or even go out on loan and make a positive impression as he is the type of striker the coach is looking for.
Rohr wants to be the top striker position of the Super Eagles with Odion Ighalo is only reliable option right now in that role, no thanks to Brown Ideye’s issues with Chinese side Tianjin Teda where he has been demoted to the reserves.
