Blessed with an electrifying pace and cool finish, Ahmed Musa rose from the Nigerian Premier League hot shot with 18 goals to become the all-time top scorer of the Super Eagles at the World Cup in only eight years.
At a reported age of 25, Musa appeared to have a very bright future ahead of him in football but his recent move to a Saudi Arabian club, Al Nasr from the Premiership is a testament to the fact that the former Kano Pillars star lacks ambition.
Though playing time has become a scarce commodity since Musa made the switch to Leicester from CSKA Moscow two years ago, it was imperative that he finds a new employer in order to develop his game especially after convincing everyone with his two goals against Iceland at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Al Nasr was the least among the suitors of Musa and making such a decision will only launch him into oblivion. It is obvious that the league in Saudi Arabia is less competitive judging by the dismal performance of the Asian team at the 2018 World Cup, with all its 23 players selected from the domestic league.
Musa should have considered Turkish club, Galatasaray where he would be guaranteed of Champions League football every season. A move like that of Musa has further proven that our footballers put financial benefit ahead of their development in the game.
I find it difficult to believe that the Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr could be celebrating the counterproductive switch of Musa to Saudi Arabia when he could have advised him to stay put in Europe for the good of the national team. With such comments from Rohr, it will not be surprise to see other senior players in Eagles join clubs in Oman, Syria and Kuwait.
With Mikel Obi, Odion Ighalo and Brown Ideye already in China, who knows by the time Qatar 2022 kicks off, we may be seeing a Super Eagles starting XI made in Asia!
