NURTW/TOAN Clash: Kwara transport union appeals for govt intervention

Following the unrest caused by clash by transport unions in Ilorin, the Union of Tippers and Quarry Employers of Nigeria (UTQEN) Kwara State branch has appealed to the Kwara State government to  intervene in the crisis.

It would be recalled that there was clash between the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers Kwara chapter and Tricycle Owners of Nigeria (TOAN),Kwara branch last week, which claimed two lives and  left many injured on both sides.

The appeal is contained in a  statement jointly signed by the association’s state Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf Magaji, the state Secretary, Mr. Ba’ale Babalola Idowu and the state Publicity Relations Officer, Mallam Ibrahim B. Jimba, and made available to the newsmen in Ilorin, on Friday.

The statement urged the state government to expedite action in order for peace to reign in the state

It also called on  leadership of the two unions to bury the hatchet.

 The union in its statement lamented that the ugly incident started last week around Offa Garage area between members of TOAN and NURTW leading to death of two people.

The statement maintained that each union has its own duly operational  certificate, which provide independent right to function  without interference of other associations.

It advised transport associations in the state to give peace a chance and  not turn the state into a battle field as a result of selfish interest as Kwara is known as state of Harmony.

“It could be recalled that last year similar incident happened between our union and the National Union of Road Transport Workers at Oke-oyi in Ilorin East Local Govetnment where our members seriously sustained injuries and  property destroyed.

“We are appealing to Kwara State government, security agents and all stakeholders in transport sector to intervene by calling allunions to embrace peace for the safety of lives and property of citizens across the state.
