Smuggling: Customs raid allegedly leaves one dead in Kwara

Service impounds 11 cars loaded with rice

Officials of Nigeria Customs Service on Sunday (yesterday) reportedly raided a den of some rice smugglers in Kwara allegedly killing one of the members in the process

It was gathered that the customs raided the den located around Oyo/Kwara boarder and chase those who escaped in the process.

According to a source who confided in our reporter, it was in the process of trying to escape to avoid arrest that one of the smugglers got shot.

“Eleven cars loaded with bags of rice was seized and taken to their command”, he added.

When contacted, the Spokesperson of the Kwara State Command of Nigeria Customs Service, Zakari Chado told National Pilot that no report has since gotten to the service on the issue adding that investigation is currently ongoing over the matter adding that the public will informed know through the press on the outcome.

Meanwhile a source in the command who claimed anonymity said that there was no gun attack during the incident.

According to him, the smugglers were trying to avoid arrest and hit themselves in the process.

“The smugglers stopped and started stoning officers of the customs and also hit them with cutlass. I think the command has stated investigation on the matter”, he added.
