Day I defeated VP, Osinbajo-led team
Abdulazeez Olagoke bagged his LL.B from the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Osun State in 1991. Subsequently, he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos campus and was called to Bar in 1992. He had his NYSC service in the Ministry of Justice, Sokoto, Sokoto State between 1992 and 93. Afterwards, he had his legal training with Chief Bayo Kehinde SAN, and Gboyega Famoju between 1994 and 1997. He’s however the principal partner of Sundry Law Firm, established in 1997 in the city of Lagos. He shares with our JUDICIARY CORRESPONDENT, KAYODE ADEOTI, his most daunting moment in court as a legal practitioner.
There are so many dramatic moments in court, but the one that comes to my mind now has got to do with political matter. It was a National Assembly Tribunal in Lagos. I had the opportunity to be on the opposite side of those we could call, giant of the law which coincidentally included the present Vice President, Yemi Osibajo (SAN), leading the legal team for the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). I was leading the team that represented the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Eventually, the team I led was able to win at the tribunal level and the matter went for appeal. And at the end, the court of Appeal upheld the decision of the Tribunal.
It was dramatic in the sense that I could observe in my client that they were jittery about how I, the Lilliputian could have defeated the giants of Law, the likes of Osinbajo SAN, Moses Banire and others. Matters of Law are decided on three issues, the fact one has, the position of the Law as far as that matter is concerned and the evidence one presented to the court. So at the end, I had the day. Also, that day, I was able to determine the personality of Osinbajo (SAN), very humble.
