By Matthew Denis

To avert calamity during the raining season, commercial drivers in Kwara State have been warned against recklessness and over speeding.

The call was made yesterday by the state Chairman, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Alhaji Abdulrahman Olayinka Onikijipa, during an interview with our reporter.

He expressed worry over the attitude of drivers being ignorance of rules and regulations of driving during the rainy season.

The Chairman said, “My advice to our drivers is that they should be vigilant nationwide because of the rainy season and it is causing flood thereby increasing damage on our roads.

“They should avoid over speeding, they must also ensure that all the accessories of their vehicles such as break systems , wipers and headlamps are in perfect condition before embarking on any journey,โ€ he said.

Onikijipa noted that when not on high speed, it will be easier for drivers to notice oncoming vehicles on the opposite lane on major roads.

According to him the union have a disciplinary committee in various motor parks and strategic points to monitor the behaviour of drivers. The RTEAN boss noted that erring drivers will be sanctioned appropriately when found wanting.

He however tasked the Federal Government to construct drainage on major roads to allow for easy passage of water.
