...want fund deployed for backlogs, minimum wage implementation

The Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has come under heavy attacks by residents of the state over the proposed Ilorin master plan.
The new master plan which was approved at a semi-virtual cabinet meeting Thursday , according to the Governor in a statement by his aide, is coming “years after the first and last one was designed by former military regime of the late Brigadier-General David Bamigboye” to address “spiralling population growth and challenges of physical development and climate change”.
“The state Executive Council approved the award of contract for the design and implementation of a new master plan and subsequent training of relevant government agencies and students in the state-owned schools to a world class firm Dar-Al-Handasah Consultants Ltd at the cost of N600m for a duration of 15 months.
However, the move has came under scattering attacks from resident who condemned the timing and huge amount expended on what they described as just a design at a time the state is going through multiple developmental problems and welfare issue especially during this period of pandemic
According to a former lawmaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon Ayanshola Muhammed during a popular radio programme in Ilorin, ‘Efura’, condemned the action of the governor and advice that such money should have been deployed to the many implementation of the new minimum wage for workers and provision of other pressing infrastructures.
“We heard the consultant has been given N600m for only Ilorin master plan. Then our question is that what is the duty of the town planning authorities where we have professionals that can handle it.
“The government is patronising consultants yet promised to engage local contractors. This is the time to think outside the box. We have not implemented the new minimum wage for workers which other states have started. Sunset workers have not received their pay yet and we now want to use N600m to draw master plan. Do you know the amount of infrastructures such money can provide for Kwara”, he queried.
Also at another radio programme held at Sobi, “Gbagede Oselu”, guests and residents some of who phoned in from US bemoaned the action of the governor adding that the timing is bad
According to the guests, Comrades Ojibara Isiaq and Alagba Olarewaju, although the plan is a laudable, the amount and timing is very wrong just for the design and asked how much will the real design gulped.
“The money is too much especially when people are in need of financial assistance during a Covid-19 pandemic”, Isaiaq added.
According to one of the respondents, “We are highly disappointed in this government. May such master plans not produce result? How the government even think using N600m to design master plan when minimum wage was yet to be implemented, teachers backlogs are there and so also other pressing financial engagement.
Adesanjo Victor Dada said we don’t need any master plan now, we have a lot of problem in the state (already) while Engr Gambel from Maraba said “The government has really disappointed us, all its policies is just too retrogressive”.
Maroof Mustapha Babatunde though did not comment, thumped up the guests and callers on the issue for their submissions.
