The Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander, Kwara State Command, Jonathan Owoade has disclosed that about 32 deaths were lost to car crashes in Kwara State in the month of September.
He attributed the accidents to reckless driving, adding that no fewer than 72 people sustained varied injuries as a result of car crashes in the month under review.
He, therefore, warned motorists against over speeding and overloading, which he said accounted for most road accidents.
Owoade stated this during World Road Traffic Day organized to remember those who had lost their lives in road accidents.
“Some drivers engage in over speeding despite the campaign by the FRSC operatives against acts that could cut short lives of road users.
“Do not over speed, avoid night driving, use seat belt as life has no duplicate. Drivers that know how to drive are those who follow the traffic rules and regulations, โhe added.
“Road Safety officers are not bad people. What we are doing is about safety and to make sure people use road in orderly manner.”
He called on religious and traditional leaders to help in the campaign to reduce accidents on Kwara and Nigerian roads.
“We have gone to motor garages to talk to people, drivers and, also working in collaboration with transport workers and associations to pass the messages.
“Passengers too should caution drivers if they are speeding beyond normal limit and report them accordingly.”
Owoade explained further that the command has begun free vehicle checks to celebrate Christmas festival.
He advised travellers to patronise motor parks where their data could be captured and avoid road side commercial vehicles popularly known as ‘soole’ in order not to put their lives at risk.
The event also featured juma’at service, visit to patients at Accident and Emergency at the General Hospital, Ilorin while the programme was rounded up with Church service at Winners church at Adewole on Sunday.
