Fraud: Herbalist disengages  counsels as court orders his remand

A 31-one-year-old self acclaimed herbalist, Isiaka Jamiu who is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before a Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin on Tuesday disengaged the service of the counsels representing him in the criminal trial.
The EFCC had on the 11th of July 2019 arraigned Jamiu on a six count charge before Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar on offences bordering on impersonation, conspiracy and Fraud to the tune of N31m.
The self acclaimed herbalist was accused of impersonating the immediate past Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Maikanti Baru, Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adeshina, National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Amina Zakari among other prominent Nigerians to defraud a Korean National, Keun Sig Kim to the tune of N31m.
The trial however took another dimension on Tuesday when the lead counsel to the herbalist,  R. A. Kamal said the accused person had at the last adjourned date after Justice Abdulgafar denied him bail instructed him to withdraw from the case.
“My Lord, at the last adjourned date, after the Court overruled his bail application, his relatives told me that they no longer need our service as Legal Practitioners, in view of the above my Lord, we shall be withdrawing our appearance from the case”
Prosecuting Counsel, Andrew Akoja, however, kicked against the oral application on the ground that the defence counsel ought to have informed the EFCC after the last adjourned date.
Justice Abdulgafar, however, granted the application and adjourned the case to 23rd September 2019.
