In this interview with ACTING EDITOR, MUMINI ABDULKAREEM, the NBA 2nd Vice President talks about one of his most dramatic moments in practice. Excerpts:
You know clients can be very funny and we have had many experiences that will go down well in our dairies. One of them was this case where I assisted somebody to collect N10,000 house rent who was my junior in secondary school and I deducted N1,000 as my ten percent. But the client now sent her younger sister to me to collect the N9,000 because she was travelling. Two months later, she came back asking for the money and I was surprised. All my explanation that she has collected the money was rejected and she demanded that I should swear with the Qur’an if I am sure of what I was saying. This was around 2007. But I reasoned that with all the things Almighty God has done for me, how much is ten thousand naira that I will now be swearing with the Qur’an and decided there was no need for that so I gave her the N9,000 and told her to just go away. Later, she came back to me that the sister said she remembered that I have given her the money. Lawyers are always on the battle field and can easily forget things of this nature at times so to guard against any omission or forgetfulness; I just gave her the money. If I had sworn that day, it would have reduced me before the client. But thank God that the truth was later revealed and my innocence established.
