Saraki hails exceptional world champion, Amusan, Brume

The immediate past Senate President of Nigeria, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki has showered encomium on the world record breaking Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan for her triumph to win gold in the 100m hurdles final, at the World Athletics Championships.

Saraki in his reaction on his social media platforms on Monday, wrote that, “Truly remarkable! .I congratulate Tobi Amusan for her historic and World Record-breaking performance in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA.

“She has brought home a Gold Medal and made the entire nation proud. Well done Tobi” he said.

Similarly another Nigerian that made the country proud in the track and field events at the World championship is Ese Brume who won silver in the long jump final giving Nigeria her second medal at the competition.

The former Kwara State Governor in his congratulatory message to Brume ,said that, “With a 7.02-meter leap in the final, I congratulate Ese Brume, who is bringing home Nigeria’s second medal at the World Athletics Championships.

“Ese, your consistency over the years and your silver medal performance in Oregon has made Nigeria proud. Well done” Saraki said.

Tobi Amusan breezed to victory, becoming the first Nigerian ever to win gold at the World Athletics Championships after racing to a stunning world record time of 12.06s.

It was the second time Amusan would break the record on the night, improving on her 12.12s in the semi-final.

On a night of many firsts, Amusan became the first Nigerian athlete to ever set a World Record in any event. It will also be the first time the Nigerian anthem would be played over the public address system during medal presentation as the winner of an event.

Amusan’s victory, will for her, be some sort of compensation for a disappointing outing in Tokyo last year where she finished fourth in the final despite being touted to take one of the medals.

She walks away with a $100,000 prize money and will now turn her attention to the Commonwealth Games beginning on Thursday, July 28 where she’s also the defending champion in the event.
