Why I enrolled for secondary education at age 50 – Oldest IGS student

Mrs. Ajayi Folashade, a 50 -year- old student of Ilorin Grammar School (IGS), has said that her dream is to become a teacher and reason she enrolled for education at the school.
She stated this Friday while fielding questions from our reporter at the school premises.
She said, “It has always been my dream and ambition to become a professional teacher. Though by education suffered setback at some point. I have never dreamt of becoming a lawyer or doctor.
“I believe I will be more fulfilled in life if I become a teacher hence the reason I am back in school,” Ajayi enthused.
The quinquagenarian who disclosed that she has a certificate in adult education programme, said her desire is to be able to write well and read fluently.
Ajayi who hails from Iludun-Oro in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State said she is not ashamed or intimidated being the oldest student in the school.
“I have never harassed by my class mates and none of them have disrespected me in anyway. I want to believe that they have been warned by the teachers.
Speaking with our reporter, her class teacher, Mrs. Olarewaju Rahamat Ademola described Ajayi’s class performance as above average.
“We felt perturbed when she joined. Because it is an usual effort in this part of the country. But we could feel her zeal to pursue western education and encouraged her.
“Her class performance is okay. In fact she performed above average in her class assessment. And with the help of other teachers she can perform better.
“Her case has since become a reference point for other students as they were charged to make hay while sunshine,” Olarewaju said.
Similarly, the principal of Ilorin Grammar School (IGS), junior section , AbdulRahman Zubair Akeyede said the new enrollee has been doing well since she joined the school.
“In fact, the woman has been doing well since she enrolled here. She brought herself to the level of other students. She has had her adult education certificate before now which is equivalent to primary school.
“She sat for entrance examination in order for us to know her ability. The exam has been marked, but it has not been communicated to me. She is presently enrolled in Junior Secondary Schoo(J.S.S 2) now.
“All our students here accorded her with utmost respect,”he further said.
