The Kwara State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Fredrick Ogidan, has revealed that 3,155 road traffic crashes were recorded in the state between January and October this year alone.
According to him, out of the total number of road crashes recorded so far, 211 persons died within the period.
Ogidan, said 1,679 males were injured in the crashes while 299 female victims and 99 children were also injured in the accidents.
He however said ” there has been a reduction in road traffic accidents in the state since he assumed duty on May 1st,2022.”
The Sector Commander, explained that as part of the strategies to reduce the menace, the sector embarked on aggressive public enlightenment programmes on the broadcast media, advocacy visits to motor parks and stakeholders engagement and submission of road audits to concerned government agencies to enable them repair failed portions of the roads.
“We also introduced red flag alerts at expressways to caution road users to cut their speed before they are cut down, and intensified mobile courts to check erring motorists in conjunction with the judiciary and the Kwara state Internal Revenue Service, KWIRS,” he further stated.
During this year’s launch of the ember months campaign recently in Ilorin, the state capital, Ogidan, warned motorists against excessive speeding, overloading and use of unsafe tyres.
The Sector Commander, also advised motorists particularly commercial drivers to obey road traffic rules and regulations in the drive by the road safety corps to reduce the carnages on the highways.
