He Knew Me Before We Even Met!’ – Okocha Reveals Messi’s Surprising Admiration

In a heartwarming encounter that has taken the football world by storm, Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha, recently shared a remarkable story about his meeting with global superstar Lionel Messi.

Okocha, known for his dazzling skills and flair on the pitch, recounted the moment when he was pleasantly surprised by Messi’s recognition of him.

“When I met Messi, he knew me before. He called me by my name. I said to him, ‘Hello Messi,’ and he replied, ‘Hello, Jay,” Okocha revealed.

Okocha, who had not expected such familiarity from the Argentine, was taken aback and turned to Luis Suárez, Messi’s then-teammate, for clarification.

“I said to Suárez, who was with him to translate, ‘I did not play in your generation. How do you remember me?’ He replied, ‘I know you well. I was watching you play with Ronaldinho in Paris. You were wonderful and a star at that time, and Ronaldinho loves you very much and talks about you in Barcelona.'” Okocha further stated.

The revelation that Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, not only remembered Okocha but also admired his skills, left the Nigerian legend in awe. Okocha’s response was one of mutual admiration and humility.

“So I said to Suárez, ‘Take me a picture with this legend.’ He said to Suárez, ‘Take me a picture with this legend on your phone as well,'” Okocha recounted, highlighting the mutual respect and humility that characterized their interaction.

Messi’s respect for Okocha didn’t end with just recognition. The Argentine went on to praise the Nigerian national team, acknowledging their talent and style of play.

“He surprised me with his humility. He spoke to me about the difficulty of the Nigerian team and that they have a team that plays beautiful football. Without a doubt, he’s the best in the world,” Okocha said.

The exchange between Messi and Okocha has resonated with fans worldwide, illustrating not only Messi’s deep knowledge of the game but also his appreciation for the legends who came before him.
