Demolition: Egbejila, Ilorin Traders Lament As Kwara Govt Issues 48-hr Evacuation Notice

Traders along Egbejila Road in Ilorin have expressed their sorrow and frustration after receiving a 48-hour notice from the Kwara State Government to vacate their trading spaces in preparation for the clearing of the Egbejila-Ajegunle Road.
The directive, issued by the Kwara State Ministry of Works on Friday, has left many traders in disarray, as they were given little time to relocate their businesses after years of operating in the area.
National Pilot findings revealed that the sudden notice has caused significant distress among the traders, many of whom are struggling to find alternative locations to continue their businesses. Affected traders lament that the notification came unexpectedly, leaving them unprepared for the disruption.
A trader, Olawumi Jimoh, who has been selling roasted corn and plantain in the area for over 10 years, expressed concerns, stating, “We were not given enough time to prepare. I have been here for over 10 years, and it is difficult to suddenly find a new place to trade. The government is supposed to find another space for us with the present economy of the country”
Another trader, identified as Kudriat, visibly worried, noted the financial strain this move could cause. “This decision is going to affect us badly. We have invested a lot into our businesses here, and now we have less than 24 hours to pack up.”
Also, an herb seller identified as Waliyat lamented: ” As I am like this, I don’t know where to go after this. I don’t even know how to dismantle my structure before tomorrow. The government should have mercy on us”
As the deadline looms, the trader hopes for a resolution that will balance the government’s infrastructure goals with their immediate need for stability and support.
