A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday at God First Plaza, located directly opposite the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) along Ogbondoroko Road in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The blaze reportedly started around 6:20 am and affected a one-storey complex that comprises ten two-bedroom apartments and ten commercial shops.
Confirming the incident in a statement released from Ilorin on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said “firefighters crew promptly responded and arrived at the scene to find a one-storey building housing 10 units of two-bedroom flats and 10 shops engulfed in flames.
“Undeterred, the gallant firemen immediately swung into action, demonstrating exceptional professionalism and expertise.
“Their swift intervention successfully curtailed the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent structures.”
Hassan further disclosed that “during the firefighting operation, a loud explosion from shattering glass startled occupants, causing them to flee the scene.
“Thankfully, no injuries were recorded, and all fire officers remained unharmed. Due to the firemen’s courageous efforts, only one flat was affected by the outbreak.”
According to the spokesman, “preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was triggered by a power surge. The affected flat contained numerous combustible materials, which contributed to the rapid escalation of the flames.”
