AFCON 2019: Positives from Eagles’ defeat of Seychelles

The Super Eagles at the weekend did the needful by securing a 3-0 win at Seychelles in a 2019 African Nations Cup qualifier though it must be said that there were a few nervy moments in the encounter.
In terms of the way we defended, Kenneth Omeruo performed below experienced and the Eagles would have conceded at least two goals but for the toothless attackers of the home team.
Two players caught my fancy; Samuel Kalu and Rotherham United defender, Semi Ajayi who made his debut after being introduced for Chidozie Awaziem.
Aside Ahmed Musa, who is in the form of his life despite moving to Saudi Arabia, Kalu was our best player in attack as he troubled the defence of the host and he even won a penalty which was converted by Odion Ighalo.
Ajayi, though a central defender, he did not look out of place for the few minutes he played as he even put in two crosses which were not converted by Henry Onyekuru. With such performance coming from the Rotherham defender, it is likely he will become a mainstay in the team, especially with his versatility. He has the physique to succeed in African football and he could be the perfect substitute for either William Troost-Ekong or Leon Balogun anytime one of them is not available.
Omeruo need to be consistent at the back for the Eagles otherwise he may find himself out of the team sooner than he expected just like his former teammate and defensive partner, Godfrey Oboabona. I was particularly impressed with the performance of Omeruo at the World Cup but it appears his lack of game time at Chelsea and Leganes is taking its toll on him.
With a number of players coming through the ranks, most of the inconsistent players must sit up to remain relevant in the Super Eagles set-up. Coach Gernot Rohr must continue the good work by extending his dragnet to Belgium where a certain Arnaut Danjuma and Dennis Bonaventure are banging in the goals for Club Brugge.
