Kwara Youth Group Reject Appointment of Kayode Egbetokun As New Kwara Police Commissioner

A Civil Society Organization, Kwara Youth Strategic Movement (KWYSM) has reject outrightly the appointment of Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, a former Chief Security Officer to former Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State as the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State.

Born on Sept. 4, 1964 in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, Egbetokun enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on March 3, 1990, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.

In 1999, he was appointed Chief Security Officer to Governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu.

Reacting to the appointment of Kayode Egbetokun, the Kwara Youth Strategc Movement in a Press Statement signed by the Coordinator of the group, Ambassador Gegele Ahmed Ibrahim, described the development as ill-timed and raises a lot of question on the impartiality of the Nigerian Police.

The Statement read in part “Our attention has been drawn to the appointment of Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, a former Chief Security Officer to former Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State as the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State.”

“The appointment of Egbetokun is not only ill-timed, but also raise critical questions that bother on the impartiality, neutrality and overall conduct of the Nigerian Police”

“We aver strongly that the appointment of Mr Kayode Egbetokun is a potential recipe for political instability, chaos and conflagration”

“The heavy criticism, wide condemnation and outrage that has since greeted the appointment of Egbetokun is a strong indication that the decision puts our election in grave danger and must be rescinded without further delay”

“We demand that the Inspector General of Police Adamu Mohammed quickly rescind on the decision and therefore redeploy another Police Chief to Kwara to superintend the elections that begin next Saturday, as Egbetokun’s appointment is now a subject of controversy”

The Organization concluded by Nigerian Police to remain bi-partisan, neutral and uncompromised.

“In this time of election, we encourage the Nigerian Police to jettison all forms of partisanship, as the force must not be seen to be taking sides”

“To take sides in an election where they should naturally be an arbiter, would be tantamount to a flagrant abuse of our laws and brazen subversion of the electoral process”.
