Parents and guardians have been charged to devote more attention to the education of their wards.

The state Coordinator of Zakat & Sadaqat Foundation, Alhaji Mukthar Muhammed Thanni gave the advice during the presentation of free Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) forms to 20 students from various schools in Ilorin, last Thursday.

According to him, parents should not devote time and their resources to acquiring frivolous things for their children at the expense of their education.

Speaking further, he said, many of the youth perpetrating violence are those that did not get the right attention and care from their parents and guardians.

He said, “Those young bloods that have taken to thuggery and other socia-vices are those that did not get the right attention and care from their parents. Many of them are school drop outs and unfortunately they did not acquire any skills in terms of handiwork to sustain their livelihood.

“As parents, we must fend for our children by providing them food and you must also check on them consistently at school. We should not be comfortable with buying them exorbitant gifts but we must ensure they are making progress in school,” Thanni divulged.

Addressing the beneficiaries of the free UTME forms, the Zakat & Sadaqat Foundation coordinator urged them to face their studies and to justify the confidence reposed in them by their parents and the foundation.

Speaking on the roles of the Zakat & Sadaqat Foundation, the Administrative Officer in the state, Mallam  Adisa Surajudeen Abiodun, said the group has been assisting orphans, widows and the less privileged in the society.

According to him, well-meaning individuals can also support the foundation through monthly contribution.
