By Mike Adeyemi
The Kwara State Market Association has said there is no plan to withdraw their tax responsibilities to the government.
The Iyaloja General of Kwara State, Alhaja Adenike Lambe stated this during a chat with our reporter in her office, yesterday.
According to her, “It is the legitimate right of every citizen to promptly pay his or her taxes to the government and it has not to be conditioned.
“We, Kwara traders have always been diligent in the payment of our annual levies to the state government and will not renege on this. We are law abiding people and so pay our tax as and when due.
“We just want to urge the government to replicate this by putting in place needed facilities at various markets in the state.
“Those that accused the government of not replicating the taxes paid hence they will renege on tax payment need to have a rethink.
“We cannot say because government had not made available required facilities at our various markets then now hold the government to ransom, ” she added
The market leader, however, suggested that the state government should contract tax collection to the leadership of each markets for effectiveness in the process.
“Government should give us the leverage to collect taxes at various markets for even and prompt payment. That was the system adopted by previous government.”
