Yusuf Ali’s educational journey began in 1960 when he was enrolled in a local Quranic school, alongside formal education. After completing primary school, he attended secondary modern school for three years and worked briefly before being admitted to Ibadan Boys High School. There, he excelled academically, graduating with a Grade One certificate while serving as the Labour Prefect.
His work experience included stints as a clerical officer in the Oyo State Ministry of Finance and as a laboratory attendant at Lagelu Grammar School. His tenacity led him to the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where he earned a 2nd Class Upper Division Bachelor of Laws degree. Recognized for his academic excellence, Ali received the prestigious Federal Merit Award and was a University Scholar.
After completing his undergraduate studies, Yusuf Ali attended the Nigerian Law School, where he also achieved a 2nd Class Upper Division. Not satisfied with resting on his laurels, he returned to his alma mater a decade later to complete a Master’s degree in Law (LLM) in 1991.
Yusuf Ali’s legal career began with the law firm of Adegboyega Awomolo & Co. in 1983. He rose through the ranks to become a partner before founding his own firm, Ghalib Chambers, in 1994. Under his leadership, the firm has grown to establish offices in Ilorin, Lagos, and Abuja, and is known for its excellence in litigation, arbitration, and legal consultancy.
Ali’s contributions to the legal profession extend beyond his practice. As a member of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association, International Bar Association, and Commonwealth Lawyers Association, he is a prominent figure on both the national and international legal stage. He has delivered over 300 papers at various conferences, authored more than 40 learned articles, and contributed to over 20 legal books. His expertise spans commercial law, constitutional law, Islamic jurisprudence, and arbitration.
While Yusuf Ali’s professional achievements are remarkable, his philanthropic work is equally impactful. Through the Yusuf O. Ali Foundation, he has made significant contributions to education and healthcare in Nigeria. His donations include dormitories, hostels, trauma centers, ICT centers, and e-resource facilities to institutions like the University of Ilorin, Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State University, and Kwara State Polytechnic.
Ali’s philanthropic endeavors are not limited to donations. His foundation has played an instrumental role in improving access to education and healthcare for underprivileged communities.
