Armed individuals dressed in military uniforms reportedly stormed the Oreke-Okegbo community in Kwara State’s Ifelodun Local Government Area, resulting in the death of one person and injury to another.
The attack, which occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Thursday was said to have caught residents off guard as the assailants moved into the area.
Eyewitnesses reported that a victim was shot near Awere River, while local authorities, led by Kabiesi Oloreke, struggled in vain to reach security forces in nearby Oro Ago.
Confirming the attack, Oreke’s traditional leader, Oba Joseph Sunday Adefila, told journalists that a woman was among the attackers, who arrived from a neighboring village after carrying out their operation. “One life was lost, and another individual sustained injuries,” the Oba stated somberly.
“What we gathered was that they were on their way to another place after our community when they encountered some guards protecting some Chinese nationals in the area.
“Those guards thought they were soldiers when they requested a vehicle to carry their other colleagues because they were in army uniforms.
“But attempts by the guards to authenticate their claims led to a disagreement and they left to lie in ambush. They attacked two people and killed one in the process,” he said.
Reacting to the incident on Sunday in a statement, the spokesperson for the Kwara state Police Command, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the command was aware of the incident and had commenced investigation.
“Notwithstanding, all security measures have been put in place to protect the lives and property of Kwarans. Further developments will be communicated soon,” she added.
