Water Scarcity Hits Edu, Patigi Local Government Areas of Kwara State Despite Having Commissioner of Water from the Region
By Aremu Bamidele
Residents of Edu and Patigi Local Government Areas in Kwara State, Nigeria, have been grappled with severe water scarcity, raising concerns about the management and prioritization of water resources in the region.
A vocal advocate for good governance, Abdulraheem, recently highlighted the issue in a Facebook post published on a page @ NupekoTv-Lafiagi. Abdulraheem criticized the persistent water scarcity despite the area being home to the state’s Commissioner for Water Resources, calling it a significant oversight in addressing basic community needs.
“Despite having a Commissioner for Water Resources from the area, the water scarcity issue persists, affecting agriculture, daily life, and overall well-being. The lack of access to clean and safe drinking water forces residents to rely on contaminated rivers, streams, or boreholes, leading to health complications,” Abdulraheem wrote.
In the post, Abdulraheem further argued that: “ongoing projects remain incomplete, and new initiatives are needed to address the water scarcity. Residents are exposed to water-borne diseases due to reliance on contaminated sources. Water scarcity affects agricultural productivity, hindering economic growth.”
Abdulraheem therefore, called for an immediate audit of ongoing and planned water infrastructure projects in Edu and Patigi to identify the barriers to their completion. He also urged the Commissioner for Water Resources to take urgent action, leveraging their position to bring sustainable water solutions to their home community.
