IBEDC Refutes Claims of 3,000 Employee Layoffs

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has debunked reports alleging that it recently laid off 3,000 employees, labeling the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement released on Tuesday, IBEDC clarified that its total workforce stands at around 2,500 employees, making it implausible to terminate more staff than it actually has.
“The total number of IBEDC employees is around 2,500. How could we possibly dismiss more than our total workforce?” the statement read.
The company emphasized that dismissing such a large number of employees would significantly disrupt its operations and hinder its ability to provide reliable service to customers.
IBEDC also condemned the ongoing spread of misinformation, noting that it was being wrongly associated with challenges faced by an entirely different organization. The company called on journalists and the public to fact-check information before sharing unverified claims.
“As a responsible corporate entity committed to ethical human resource practices, we encourage the media and the public to confirm details before publishing misleading reports,” IBEDC stated.
IBEDC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high service standards and operating with transparency, assuring customers of its dedication to ethical business practices and quality service delivery.
Earlier, reports emerged of protests organized by the Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC). The demonstrations involved workers employed through an outsourced recruitment firm contracted by IBEDC. Protesters demanded improved wages, better career advancement opportunities, and raised concerns over the alleged dismissal of some colleagues.
In response, key stakeholders, including labour union leaders and the recently retired Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, have stepped in to mediate and address the situation.
