Kwara to distribute 2m free mosquito nets in 2 weeks

To reduce mortality rate through malaria, the Kwara State Government will commence distribution of 1, 997, 000 free Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) in two weeks.

To this effect, local government employees have been directed by the state Ministry of Health to commence house to house numbering across the three Senatorial Districts of Kwara.

Yesterday, this medium observed some officials from Ilorin West Local Government were numbering houses at Osere area, ahead of the distribution of the treated mosquito nets.

One of the LG staff who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “We are from Ilorin West Local Government and we are distributing numbers in preparation for the distribution of treated mosquito nets.”

In a telephone conversation last night with the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Suleiman Atolagbe Alege, he said the distribution of treated mosquito nets was to combat the spread of malaria in the state. He added that the distribution will be carried out across the 16 local government areas of the state except Oyun which was used as pilot scheme.

According to him, the numbering is to identify the area of coverage and for people to also be aware of the distribution centre in their areas.

“We are currently numbering all houses to be covered and the distribution will commence on 28 of this month and will end on 3rd of next month.

“Everyone is expected to go out and collect their own net at any distribution centre on the card given to them during the numbering exercise, ” he said.

He urged residents of the state to collect and make use of the mosquito nets for its intended purpose adding that adequate facilities had been put in place to ensure a smooth process throughout the state.
