Rerun: PDP wins in Bauchi, Kano as APC secures victory in Imo, Ogun, Cross River

It was mixed fortunes for the ruling and opposition parties as results of the rerun elections across 11 states have showed that candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged winners in the exercise.
On Saturday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted the rerun for 28 constituencies in both the national assembly and state houses of assembly.
In Bauchi, the PDP’s Auwal Jatau defeated his APC counterpart — who had been sacked — to emerge winner of the election for Zaki local government federal constituency.
Ahmed Kutama, the returning officer, announced that he got a total of 782 votes to defeat Umar Tata who garnered 401 votes. Both had 15,307 and 15,405 votes respectively in the initial poll.
In Kano, Abdulmumin Jibrin, who was declared winner of the initial election, also lost to his counterpart in the PDP.
Aliyu Detti Yako was declared winner of the rerun for Kiru/ Bebeji federal constituency with 48,601 votes while Jibrin polled 13,507 votes.
In Imo, the APC emerged victorious in Okigwe north federal constituency after Miriam Onuoha, its candidate, garnered 23,690 votes while Obinna Onwubuariri of the PDP got 10,010 votes.
The PDP candidate had been declared winner of the initial poll but the court sacked him and ordered a rerun in all the three council areas of the constituency.
In Ogun, INEC declared the APC’s Kolapo Osunsanya winner of the rerun for Ijebu-Ode/Odogbolu/Ijebu north-east federal constituency.
Osunsanya polled 25,959 votes to defeat his closest rival, Taiwo Shote of the PDP, who scored 21,911 votes.
In Kaduna, both the APC and the PDP shared the spoil in the state constituency rerun elections.
The APC’s Nuhu Goro was declared the winner of the exercise for Kagarko state constituency seat with 24,658 votes to defeat Morondia Tanko of the PDP who got 20,206 votes.
For the second seat of Sanga constituency, Comfort Amwe of the PDP polled 19,815 votes to emerge winner while Haliru Dangana of the APC scored 19,688 votes.
In Abia, it was victory time for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) which won the two constituencies in which the rerun was conducted.
Obinna Ichita was declared winner of the Aba south state constituency with 4,634 votes, with the PDP’s Clinton Ebere trailing behind with 3,154 votes.
Mike Ukoha of APGA also won in the Arochukwu constituency rerun after polling 6,550 votes to defeat Eric Kalu of the PDP.
In Cross River, the APC took the national slot while the PDP went local; Alex Egbonna of the APC was declared winner of the Yakurr/Abi federal constituency rerun having polled 29,716 votes to defeat John Lebo of the PDP, who got 26,039 votes.
The PDP’s compensation came at the house of assembly where Davies Etta, its candidate, won the rerun for Abi constituency with 13,349 votes. Eyeng Iwqara of the APC trailed behind with 8, 792 votes.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won the rerun elections for the senate, state and federal constituencies in Akwa Ibom State.
The elections held on Saturday in only one local government area – Essien Udim local – in the state. It was, however, characterised by violence and ballot-stealing.
Some election officials were held hostage in the area, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said.
For the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District election, the PDP candidate, Chris Ekpenyong, scored 134,717 votes to beat the former senator, Godswill Akpabio, who had 83,820 votes, according to the result released Sunday morning by INEC.
Mr Akpabio lost his bid to return to the Senate for a second term in 2019 when INEC declared Mr Ekpenyong winner of the poll.
Amid complaints of election fraud and a petition to the tribunal, the former Senate minority leader who was later appointed minister of Niger Delta Afairs, said he was no longer interested in a repeat poll, but INEC rejected a replacement of candidate.
The PDP candidate for the Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency election, Nsikak Ekong, scored 45,366 votes, while his closest rival Emmanuel Akpan of the All Progressives Congress (APC) scored 22,757.
For the Essien Udim State Constituency, the PDP candidate, Esse Umoh, scored 18,999 votes, while the APC candidate, Nse Ntuen scored 7,108 votes.
The APC and its candidates for elections into the state and federal constituencies had announced their withdrawal from the poll hours before its commencement.
Giving reasons for his withdrawal, Nse Ntuen, the APC candidate for the Essien Udim State Constituency election, claimed he won 2019 election and that the Court of Appeal did not order for a rerun election.
Mr Ntuen said, in a statement on Friday, that he has filed a suit in court to “compel INEC to release my Certificate of Return and disembark from conducting any election without further delay”.
On his part, Emmanuel Akpan, the APC candidate for the Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency election, said he withdrew from the rerun because he did not trust the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mike Igini, to organise a free and fair election.
Politician shot dead allegedly by own security detail
A senatorial candidate in last year’s general elections, Ndubuisi Emenike, has been shot dead.
Mr Emenike was allegedly shot by an official of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC).
The late politician was the senatorial candidate of the Actional Alliance (AA) for Imo North Senatorial District in the 2019 National Assembly election.
Premium Times report that the security officer who shot Mr Emenike was attached to him as a security detail. The name of the official could not be ascertained.
The incident happened around 5 p.m. on Sunday at the country home of Miriam Onuoha in Umunachi, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.
Mrs Onuoha was the APC candidate for Okigwe North Federal Constituency in the re-run election which held on Saturday.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had announced the APC candidate as the winner of the election.
It was learnt that Emenike was shot dead by the NSCDC official during the celebration party that started shortly after Onuoha was declared winner of the election by INEC.
The NSCDC operative is said to have followed his principal to the victory party.
Witnesses said the official was shooting consistently into the air and mistakenly shot his boss, disrupting the party which was already underway.
Emenike fell and lost consciousness and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead.
The police spokesman in the state, Orlando Okeokwu, confirmed the incident.
He said the NSCDC official has been detained and the killing is being investigated.
