What Mourinho told us against City – Smalling reveals

Manchester United’s derby-day winner Chris Smalling has revealed what Jose Mourinho said to them at half time that propelled them to come from two goals down to beat Manchester City 3-2.

The Red Devils had endured a poor first half which saw them go two goals down, but rallied back to score three in the second half with Smalling getting the third and the winner and the England defender, who failed to mark Vincent Kompany for City’s opener, has revealed what was said to them by Mourinho at half time, and he made up for his earlier mistake.

“I owed them that,” he said of his winner.

“When you make a mistake, you want an opportunity to make amends. You could see the relief after the first goal and I’m just glad to contribute.

“We came in at half-time feeling sorry for ourselves and we knew that we needed to play with pride in the second half. The first half was terrible — dropped off, didn’t play our game and could have been out of sight.

“The manager didn’t have to say much because we knew we’d let ourselves down. He said that he didn’t want us to be the clowns who stand there watching them win their trophy.”
