By Matthew Denis
The Kwara state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is finalising plans to arrive at consensus candidate for the governorship race in the state come 2019.
The Youth Leader of the party, Prince Aliyu Dantsoho Mahmood made the disclosure during an interview with this medium at the Ilorin international airport on Tuesday.
He said “in a democratic party like ours, consensus is part of our constitutional provision in fielding out with candidate to occupy political positions. This reduces the stress, rancour and acrimony within the party.
“In the absence of a consensus, you go for primary, but this time we want to learn from the party mistakes by coming out with a consensus candidate so that the party can be more united and formidable to take over the leadership of the state in 2019 election.
According to him, zoning of the candidate will be party’s priority considering the fact that the present Governor is from Kwara South senatorial district.
He added he party is looking towards Kwara North and Central since South is occupying the seat now adding that “we’re going to pick a particular aspirant from these two zones as the consensus candidate”.
Mahmud however stressed that the speculation that PDP is making arrangement to form alliance with other political parties in the state is not truth but rather those parties are approaching PDP for the alliance.
Opposition parties in the state have reportedly commenced machinery with the PDP to come out with a single candidate to unseat the ruling party in the 2019 governorship race.
The youth leader however said, “Our party PDP is a mega party, it is all the other parties that are trying to form alliance with us. We are big umbrella that can accommodate every interest so it’s a welcome development. We are already talking on this arrangement”.
