Gov Ahmed receives winners of ECOWAS Junior Athletics Championship

 

…promises revival of inter-school sports competition

Kwara State Government has restated its resolve to revive Athletic competition across secondary schools in the state with a view to encouraging sports and discover hidden talents.

The state Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed in his remarks when he received the winners of the ECOWAS Junior Athletics Championship held in Cape Coast, Ghana, recently, observed that lack of boarding system had negative effects on the competition.

According to the Governor, “Lack of boarding system in schools had reduced interface within youths in sporting activities to enable them discover themselves and optimise their potentials.

“As a government, we will do everything possible to re-introduce sports competition in our secondary schools in order to discover and encourage hidden talents to make the state and the country great “.

Governor Ahmed who underscored the importance of sports to the growth and development of any society, spoke of his government’s resolve to use the instrumentality of sports to take the state to the next level.

He also encouraged youths to be more focused and determined in their chosen career in order to make themselves proud in particular and the state at large.

The former Chairman of the Kwara State chapter of the Federation of Nigeria Athletes, Alhaji Tunde Kareem had earlier in his remarks expressed gratitude to the governor for sponsoring coaches for training in Germany, explaining that the victory of the Athletes was made possible by the training of their coaches.

Kareem told the Governor that 14 West African countries participated in the competition and Nigeria in which Kwara representatives came first.

He explained that another edition of the competition would hold in Nigeria disclosing that it was proposed to hold in Kaduna state.

He also told the Governor that two of the winners in the Cape Coast had been penciled down to represent Nigeria in Finland, appealing to the Governor to sponsor them.
