Schools managements have been urged to bring innovations into learning process for better understanding by pupils.
This charge was made by the former chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Kwara State Council, Comrade Abiodun Abdulkareem at the Prize Giving ceremony of TOYABOM Glory Field International School, Adewole, Ilorin, Kwara State, last Thursday.
Abdulkareem, who was the guest speaker at the event, decried contemporary teaching and learning method in which students cannot apply what they have learnt, saying “There is no more creativity rather emphasis is laid on bookishness and regurgitation of facts.”
He also lamented that many products of current education system can hardly write down or converse fluently in English Language.
“Worst still, most of these school products adulterate their mother tongue with borrowed languages in which they are not proficient,” he added.
Abdulkareem noted the prevailing anti-social behaviours among contemporary students and called on stakeholders in the education sector to address the problem with a view to raising standard of education.
“Among these bad acts are examination leakages, truancy, lateness, rudeness to teachers, drug abuse, late night party attendance, cultism among others common among the students in the contemporary school system,
“School calender is so much disrupted as a result of disturbances from in and outside the school system. The school programmes are often inadequately covered yet the system will produce graduates that are often referred to as ill-baked products of the school system,” he further noted.
Abdulkareem, however, attributed the falling standard of education in this country to ill-preparation of pupils in primary schools for further education, lackadaisical attitudes to learning, poor attitudes and lack of dedication of teachers to teaching, poor staffing with inadequate school resources among others.
He added that for improved and standard education, government must provide conducive educational environment with training facilities for students and teachers.
He further tasked government to create avenue for Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), philanthropists and well meaning Nigerians to revamp the education sector
Earlier in her remarks, the school proprietress, Mrs Omoyinwola Moito appealed to parents to be vigilant and protect their children during the holidays and at all times, adding that teachers can’t do it all.
