The 2018 National Sports Festival on Wednesday received a boost as the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed was presented with the Touch of Unity by National Sports Commission, North Central Zone.
Ahmed after receiving the Torch from North Central Zone Sports Coordinator of the National Sports Festival, Dr Patrick Uwagbale, restated his government’s commitment to strengthening sports development for youth growth, development and national unity.
Ahmed who underscored the importance of sports, stressed the need for government at all levels to pull resources together to restore lost glory of sports for overall development and growth.
According to the governor, “We must join hands together to build on achievements in sports for youth development and national unity.
“We must come together irrespective of ethnic, nationality and religion affiliations to build a virile society and create a sense of belonging for all in the name of national unity”.
The North Central Zone Sports Coordinator, Dr. Uwagbale had in his remarks identified sports as a powerful tool to promote peace, tolerance and understanding and also capable of bringing people together across boundaries, cultures and religions.
He explained that Mr President flagged off the presentation of Torch of Unity in Abuja, on October 1st this year, saying that the Torch of Unity symbolises peace.
Uwagbale told the governor that he was directed to go round the North Central Zone with the Torch of Unity, explaining that he had taken the same to Nasarrawa, Benue, Niger among others.
