Casual Workers: KWHA probes College of Health Tech, Offa

The Kwara State House of Assembly has directed its Committee on Education and Human Capital Development to investigate the use of casual workers in the state-owned College of Health Technology, Offa.
The directive by the House followed the presentation of a petition written by a concerned citizen and Human Rights Activist, Idris Sadiq, by the House Leader, Hassan Oyeleke.
The Deputy Speaker, Chief Matthew Okedare, who presided over Thursday’s sitting, mandated the committee to submit its findings within two weeks.
The petitioner, according to the House Leader, had alleged, among other things, that over 90 per cent of workforce in the state-owned health institution, for several years, engaged to work as casuals and remained on same position without conversion as permanent workers.
This, according to the petitioner, was against the labour law and international best practices, stressing that the practice was jeopardizing the future of many youths in the state.
While insisting that the sweat and blood of the affected workers, whom he said were committed daily to the running of the institution, should not be in vain, appealed to the House to wade in, with a view to safeguarding the future of the casual workers.
