Had sleepless night, traumatised with victim account of robbery atrocities

Barrister Mrs Tijani Olawunmi Bashirat attended University of Ilorin and obtained her first degree in Law following her graduation in 2007. She subsequently went to the Nigerian Law School and was called to Bar in 2008 after which she was attached to the legal unit of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) before her engagement with the law firm of Prof Wahab Egbewole (SAN). She is presently a staff of the Kwara State Ministry of Justice and seconded to the Bureau of Lands. In this interview with ACTING EDITOR, MUMINI ABDULKAREEM, she speaks on one of her most remarkable experiences as a lawyer. Experts:
What I can remember was when I joined the service of Ministry of Justice in 2010 and was posted to the prosecution unit. By my nature I’m the scary type and I don’t really have the stomach for such jurisdiction. You know in prosecution, we prosecute armed robbers, rapists and others who have been charged with different types of offenses. So whatever I experienced in the court, whenever I get back home, it becomes a problem for me to cope with the details and will be thinking about it. I will only sleep for a short time. The moment it is 12am, I won’t be able to sleep at all because of what I’ve seen in the court. In fact I normally transfer it to my husband and each time I wake up, I will wake him too and we won’t sleep till the following morning. I will be telling him please go and check our burglary and door; all because of what have been related in court and how the event happened. It’s like a trauma. I didn’t spend up to five years at the prosecuting unit before I was seconded to the Bureau of Lands where I am presently. For Instance, there was this Armed robbery case that happened along Oyun road, near Kwara State Polytechnic, the victim narrated that the assailants came after her husband who is a banker but the husband wasn’t at home and she was pregnant, immediately they gained entrance, they asked her to lie down, trampling on her with no regard for her gestational state you’ll also hear of armed robbers using jack to open up burglary. Those kind of tales really scares me and I usually have recurring images. When I was posted out of the prosecution Unit of the ministry, I was so happy.
