Alleged Defection to APC: Going, going…for Kwara LG chairmen

Following the arrest of suspended 16 Local Government council chairmen
in Kwara State by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) two months ago, there have been concerns by
stakeholders and opposition on alleged attempt to politicise the issue
by the ruling administration amidst talks of their alleged plan to
defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). HEAD POLITICS, MUMINI
ABDULKAREEM writes on the development.
Two months ago, the report of the alleged plan by the suspended 16
Local Government chairmen in Kwara State was received with mixed
feelings. Following weeks of speculation  over the issue, one of the
leaders of the Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq Support Group (AASG) during a
recent special prayer organised by the Isin chapter in Kwara South,
Hon Segun Awogbade, led the cat out of the bag when he publicly
confirmed that all the council chairmen formerly in the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) are now in All Progressives Congress (APC) and
are members of the AASG.
To confirm the authenticity of the issue and further drive the reality
home in the political gathering, Elder Awogbade added that but for the
engagement of the suspended chairman of Isin, Hon Oladipo Omole, he
would have been with them at the programme which also had in
attendance notable leaders of the opposition party now in the APC.
The defection, it was gathered, was part of the political solution
they reportedly sought over their predicament from the ruling
administration in the state.
A very close and reliable source to the chairmen confirmed the issue
in a telephone chat adding that they (the chairmen) have been meeting
with political heavyweights in the state to speak to the Governor over
the issue.
“Yes, the plan is on and they want to move to APC anytime from now.
Discussion is still ongoing and that was what prompted the withdrawal
of their case in court in the first place. The whole issue was the
initiative of the chairmen, it is not that anybody is pressurising
them. They are the one that came up with the idea of political
solution which they later withdrew their case in court. But discussion
is still going on about the modalities.
“The EFCC is still investigating them despite the development just
like the House of Assembly did theirs and they (the chairmen)
attended. Even the four that were not on the same page with them
initially are now together. They have been to the EFCC, made their
case known and defended what they had to defend.
“They are going about meeting different political heavyweights in the
state to talk to the Governor because only he can say now that they
have… Everything is covered by the political solution that they are
trying to work out. Nobody can really define all that is contained in
there”, the source added.
Asked whether plans are on for them to continue in office, the source
said nobody can say for now and “you know the Governor is largely
unpredictable”, he added.
When asked about the issue before their investigation by the EFCC, one
of the chairmen had noted that they have not gotten to the bridge then
and they will cross it when the time comes.
While the issue of their alleged impending defection is still hanging,
many political observers are of the opinion that the action might
amount to nothing but a political suicide at the end of the day going
by the present narratives of the ruling government of not bringing the
highly expectant electorate to the speed they had envisaged aftermath
the election. Many even see the current scenario as a huge loss of the
political capital that it benefited and ultimately rode to power.
For the opposition PDP, the ‘siddon look’ approach in the face of the
many ‘summersaults’ of the ruling party and the government may be
doing more damage to the political space than helping it when they
should have engaged in critical and constructive introspection that
will only succeed in deepening the political process and enriching
good governance in the state.
For those who may still be nursing concern or expressing doubt about
the development, the refusal of any of the chairmen or the leadership
of the All Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) to disown the statement
either collectively or individually points to the fact that the deal
between the concerned parties in this alliance has been concluded. The
caveat is just waiting for the right and appropriate time to strike in
return for political patronage.
But how did we get here in the first place. The present situation,
according to political pundits, followed weeks and months of
“investigation” by the Ilorin zonal Head Office of the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and subsequent arrest for alleged
mismanagement of council funds while in office. This is also coming on
the heels of their suspension by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq
following the recommendation by the Kwara State House of Assembly
(KWHA) based on a petition that has been a subject of disagreement
between the state chapters of the ruling and opposition parties.
But shortly after the Governor wielded the big stick suspending the
council bosses, ALGON in a statement signed by its Chairman and
Secretary, Joshua Omokanye and Mallam Abubakar Abdullahi Bata
respectively surprisingly threw its weight in support of the move and
maintained that they willingly withdraw the suit challenging their
suspension by the state government. However, four of the chairmen
(Ilorin West, Ilorin East, Irepodun, Ekiti) disagreed with the
proposal and vowed to proceed with the case instituted in court to
challenge their suspension, a position wholly supported by PDP (their
party).
Amidst report by the opposition and some stakeholders that the
government is using the issue to play politics, the PDP through its
State chairman, Engr Kola Shittu told Pilot Politics that while the
party is not in support of the action that encourages graft, it will
not accept the alleged move to use the development as a form of
blackmail to compel the affected chairmen to dump their party for the
APC.
In a follow up statement personally signed by him recently, Shittu
noted that the Governor in an attempt to force the embattled Council
chairmen  who have been indicted by the report of the Kwara State
House of Assembly Ad-Hoc investigation committees on mismanagement of
funds were being threatened to dump the opposition party failure upon
which EFCC would be unleashed on them.
According to Shittu, Governor Abdulrazaq-led APC administration was
using instruments of the state, especially the EFCC to witch-hunt and
intimidate political opponents to settle political scores and force
them to join the APC noting that Kwara could have been better if such
energy was focused on good governance since he was sworn-in.
In a follow up to the PDP’s position, a Kwara-based civil right group,
Kwara Advancement Initiative (KAI), similarly raised concern over
alleged politicisation of the whole issue warning the EFCC not to
allow itself to be dragged into politicisation of the arrest, grilling
and subsequent release of the chairmen.
While declaring support for the probe, KAI in a statement signed by
its Convener, Sulaiman Rasheed, and sent to Pilot Politics, alleged
that Governor Abdulrazaq is using the probe to pressurise the chairmen
to join the APC and advised the anti-graft agency to ensure justice
was served at the end of the day.
Now, just like the PDP noted that the embattled chairmen or some of
them have the liberty to decide whether they want to join the ruling
party or not, there are already talks in the polity that has
highlighted such moves, the veracity of which is still subject to
unfolding events in the coming days.
Curiously and unlike how it had handled past investigation, the EFCC
have kept sealed lips on whether the chairmen would be charged to
court or not, giving some credence to the narrative of seeking for a
political solution to the issue backed by the ruling government. This
is coming amidst talks that the Governor might be working on having a
Plan B to use the embattled chairmen as arsenals particularly in the
leadership crisis rocking the APC.
So, when will the local government chairmen finally jump the ship to
embrace the ruling APC in this scenario or will there be a last-minute
chess. Is their arrest and subsequent investigation by the EFCC a
betrayal of trust on the part of the government or rather a political
strategy by the Governor Abdulrazaq-led administration. These and
other puzzles will become clearer in the coming days. However, it is
interesting that the National Leader of the opposition PDP and former
Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has given anybody that wants to
cross carpet in the language of politics the free will to do so.
