Xenophobia: NANS shutdown Shoprite, DSTV, MTN in Ilorin over killings of Nigerians in S/Africa

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Kwara Axis yesterday, shut down South African businesses in the state.
The studentsโ body closed down Shoprite along Fate road, MTN office at Ibrahim Taiwo Road and DSTV office all in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, among other businesses operated by South Africans in the state.
This is coming on the heels of xenophobic killings of Nigerians in South Africa.
Confirming the development, the state chairman of NANS, Saheed Olosasa condemned the incessant killings of Nigerians in South Africa.
โThe killing of Nigerians in South Africans has gotten to an alarming rate that we can no longer tolerate.โ
Shoprite and DSTV were however re-opened after about two hours of closure although the MTN office is still under lock after the management failed to attend to the students till the time of filing this report.
Olosasa said, โThe management of Shoprite and DSTV showed remorse and even pasted the campaign against xenophobic attacks at the walls of their buildings and since our message had been passed, we found it worthy to reopen their business after asking them to send a clear warning to South Africa. However, the MTN office is still under lock as the management and staff appeared not ready to attend to the protesting students.โ
Speaking further on NANSโ demand, the student leader said, โthe management of those companies should contact their South African bosses to discourage the xenophobic attack in their country. They should also write a letter of apology to Nigerian students and other necessary quarters.โ
The multitude of students who trooped out for the protest were escorted by 12 vans conveying police officers and men of the DSS to maintain law and order.
It will be recalled that on June 23, a Nigerian, Mrs Elizabeth Ndubuisi was strangulated in her hotel room (Emperorโs Palace Hotel & Convention Centre) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Sheโs the Deputy Director General of Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN). This is among other several killings of Nigerians in the country.
Reacting to this, the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had assured the nation that everything would be done to unravel the death of the late Mrs Ndubuisi.
Mrs Dabiri-Erewa, in a tweet on July 7, said no cover-up would be allowed by Nigeria.
She had tweeted: โEverything will be done to unravel the death of such a great woman. Our mission in Johannesburg will ensure that. We will not relent. Iโm demanding this.โ
โNo cover-up will be allowed. I have faith in our mission in Joโburg. Investigations will be thorough. Itโs a painful period. We must ensure matter unraveled.โ
