Looters of Kwara funds ‘ll be charged to court, next week – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Zonal Head, Ilorin
Zonal office, Isyaku Sharu has said looters of the state fund would be
taken to court from next week.
The EFCC boss said, substantial amount of money has been recovered
from the last administration.
Sharu made the disclosure yesterday at the 26th edition of Nigeria
Union of Journalists(NUJ) Media Parliament tagged; “Anti-Corruption
Fight in Nigeria, Progress, Challenges: The Kwara Experience” held
yesterday at the Press Centre.
He said Nigeria now ranks 144th position out of 180, a sharp shift
from second to the last position the country occupied some years ago.
Sharu however said the Commission would not relent in its
anti-corruption crusade till the country is cleaned of the mess.
“I am happy to inform you that the country now ranks 144th out of
180. Before now, Nigeria used to be second to last after Bangladesh.
Though we are yet to win the war against corruption, we are however
striving to ensure the country is corruption-free,” he said.
Sharu said the Kwara office was opened after the Chairman of the
Commission, Ibrahim Magu felt a need for a Zonal office to clean up
lingering corruption practices in the state.
He said the Commission discovered in Kwara that civil servants in most
cases helped politicians to siphon funds adding that the state workers
teach politicians how to loot.
He, however, urged Residents of Kwara to provide the Commission with
useful information to curb the continuation of corrupt practices in
order to make the country safe for the unborn generation.
“Our anti-Corruption crusade has sanitised cybercrime, vote-buying,
civil servants aiding corrupt practices and not only focused on
politicians,” he added.
In his welcome address, the Chairman Kwara State NUJ, Mallam Umar
Abdulwahab said the programme was designed to interact with various
institutions in order to bridge the gap and avail newsmen first-hand
information.
He said the council deems it fit to have the EFCC boss on the platform
due to his performance within a short period.
