FUOYE Killings: Police warn NANS against protest

The police in Ekiti State have warned the National Association of
Nigerian Students (NANS) against its plan for a mass protest over the
killing of two students of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) by
the police, last week.
The police spokesperson in the state, Caleb Ikechukwu, gave the
warning through a statement he issued on Sunday.
The NANS earlier said its members are moving to the state from across
the country for โmass actionโ over the killing of the two students
during a protest over poor power supply to their school.
NANS said its officials and other students from across the country
would visit the management of FUOYE, families of the deceased
students, traditional rulers of each community they visit, injured
students at the hospital, Benin Electricity Distribution Company,
Ekiti State Government, State Security Service and the State Police
Command.
The police spokesperson condemned the movement of NANS into Ekiti
State and accused the student leaders of inciting violence in the
โpeaceful state.โ
He alleged that some of the student leaders were โnot currently
students of any Higher Institution of Learning in Ekiti State.โ
Ikechukwu reiterated the constitutional mandate of the police to
maintain law and order and advised NANS to avoid a breach of law and
order in the state.
He said the police would arrest and prosecute any person or group who
take the law into their hands, no matter their status.
